During recent years, the alto saxophone player Johannes Ludwig and guitarist Gero Schipmann have worked together regularly. The Human Element is the name the two instrumentalists, both born in 1988, gave to the ensemble that they founded to play the music they developed. It is flexible in size, depending on the project at hand. Thus, The Human Element has released a quintet album with musicians from London – where Schipmann lived and studied for a while – and at the moment they are active in a trio with percussionist Alex Parzhuber. Currently, Schipmann plays mainly the baritone guitar, which has a longer scale length and therefore sounds lower than a standard guitar. Ludwig, on the other hand, experiments with all kinds of implements from the digital toolkit, seeking to expand and alienate the sound colour of his alto saxophone. The sound of this trio often evokes rock and roughness, but it also features the depth and two-dimensionality of ambient music and the trance-like elements of minimal music.
