We are all lichens

A soprano voice and a double bass – an extreme, entirely improbable combination. The same goes for the conjunction of the sparse, minimalistic-microtonal music by the Czech composer Martin Smolka and the powerful sounds of the Polish artist Anna Zaradny. Yet both new works are contributions to the Festival theme of »Amnesia and Memory«, created especially for the project. Juliet Fraser and Florentin Ginot manage to forge a close connection between the divergent sound worlds: between the individual numbers of Smolka’s acoustic, through-composed song cycle, there are interludes in which Zaradny uses live electronics and improvisation to process the sound of voice and bass. It is an experience as contradictory and profound as the project motto »We are all lichens« by the historian of science and technology and feminist Donna Haraway: »We are all lichens; so we can be scraped off the rocks by the Furies, who still erupt to avenge crimes against the Earth.«
