Memory An Instruction Manual
The contribution by the Portuguese composer and electronics specialist Luís Antunes Pena promises a very literal reference to the Festival’s theme. His trio with Francesco Dillon, cello, and Nuno Aroso, percussion, is called Ruído Vermelho, or Red Noise in English. In physics, this denotes a spectrum of frequencies with strong correlations. Limited patterns form, creating an impression of regularity. Everything seems to proceed calculably, despite coincidence ultimately reigning. This formal appearance, however, has its own sensual aesthetic quality, and Pena and his trio have developed a special weakness for it. For their Cologne concert, Ruído Vermelho has teamed up with the Ensemble Musikfabrik. The instrumentation is also extraordinary. Nuno Aroso plays a Cristal Baschet, which resembles a glass harp or friction harmonica, in that glass rods are made to vibrate by being touched with wet fingers.
